How prospective students and media representatives can prepare a useful enquiry.

How to prepare a graduate-study enquiry

A useful first message should make it possible to assess research fit, preparation, timing, and the feasibility of support. Work through these five steps before writing. Specific, well-organized information is much more useful than a generic request for admission.

  1. Program and applicant statusState the degree sought, intended start term, and whether you are applying as a domestic or international student.
  2. Specific research interestsIdentify the technical area and explain what problem interests you. PhD applicants should include a well-considered research question; it need not become the final thesis question, but it should demonstrate how you frame and investigate a research problem.
  3. Relevant preparationSummarize degrees, courses, research, publications, design projects, software, laboratory work, and other experience that bears directly on the proposed area.
  4. Funding requirementIndicate whether funding is required. If it is, state the level of annual support needed and whether that amount must also cover tuition and compulsory fees. Identify scholarships or external support already held or being pursued.
  5. Supporting materialInclude a CV and, where useful, transcripts, publications, thesis material, project reports, code or design portfolios, and links that permit a substantive assessment.
