Photonics and Optoelectronics Stream

A stream pathway within Carleton's existing CEAB-accredited B.Eng. Electrical Engineering degree. The model is intentionally modest, remains a 21.0-credit pathway, and does not add net credits within the current degree framework.

Program Snapshot

Degree Framework

Within Existing B.Eng. EE

The stream remains within the existing Electrical Engineering degree rather than creating a separate program structure.

Curricular Model

Small and Auditable

ELEC 2PHO replaces ELEC 2602, while ELEC 4CPO and ELEC 4SPD use existing upper-year elective space.

Project Structure

Standard 3907, Specialized 4909

ELEC 3907 remains the standard EE Engineering Project, while ELEC 4909 replaces ELEC 4907 for stream students in the Year 4 capstone slot.

What Students Complete

  • ELEC 2PHO in place of ELEC 2602
  • One approved elective from Basket A (photonics devices, materials, and optical systems)
  • One approved elective from Basket B (optoelectronic circuits, interfaces, and integration)
  • ELEC 4CPO and ELEC 4SPD in existing elective space
  • ELEC 4909 in place of ELEC 4907 in the Year 4 capstone slot

Supporting Context

  • Optional summer co-op participation may complement the pathway
  • Additional approved electives may support different emphasis areas
  • Delivery relies on departmental resources and normal planning processes
