B.Eng. EE Stream Pathway

The stream is designed within Carleton's existing accredited Electrical Engineering degree and keeps the curricular change focused on a modest stream-specific pathway.

Executive Summary

The stream pathway remains within the existing CEAB-accredited B.Eng. Electrical Engineering degree. It is built around one required-course replacement, two new upper-year stream courses in existing elective space, approved stream-elective baskets, and a one-for-one Year 4 capstone replacement. The pathway remains 21.0 credits and does not add net credits.

Curricular Structure

Required-Course Replacement

ELEC 2PHO Introduction to Photonics replaces ELEC 2602 for students in the stream pathway.

Approved Stream Elective Baskets

Students complete 1.0 credit of approved upper-year stream electives within the remaining two Year 4 engineering elective slots: 0.5 credit from Basket A and 0.5 credit from Basket B.

Upper-Year Courses and Capstone

ELEC 4CPO and ELEC 4SPD are accommodated within existing upper-year elective space, while ELEC 4909 replaces ELEC 4907 one-for-one in the existing capstone slot.

Project Alignment

ELEC 3907 remains the standard EE Engineering Project in Year 3. The stream-specific project identity moves to ELEC 4909 Photonics and Optoelectronics Capstone Project, which replaces ELEC 4907 in the existing Year 4 capstone slot for stream students.

This keeps the pathway coherent while leaving the underlying project and capstone structures under normal departmental control.

Degree and Accreditation Context

The stream designation sits within the existing B.Eng. Electrical Engineering degree. Carleton would document the pathway as part of the accredited degree framework, including AU review by pathway and appropriate treatment of the stream designation on the degree parchment.

Planning Notes

  • The stream rule set is intended to be simple and auditable
  • Additional approved electives may support different emphasis areas within the pathway
  • Summer co-op may complement the pathway, subject to normal co-op and employer processes
  • Any incremental resource needs are expected to follow normal planning and approval processes
